| Apache, a police K-9 who served with the Indiana State Police for over eight years, officially retired after an honorable and heroic career. Partnered with Trooper Walter Butt since 2016, Apache once took a bullet to protect his handler during a 2017 shooting, recovered within three weeks, and returned to duty. Throughout his service, Apache helped seize over 950 pounds of illegal drugs, 167 firearms, and $1.6 million in drug money, and assisted in 84 criminal apprehensions. His work also included hundreds of traffic sniffs, warrant services, school and building searches, and tracking operations. To honor his dedication, the department held a full retirement ceremony where Apache received his favorite treats and recognition before being given his final “10-42” marking the end of his duty. He will now enjoy retirement as a family pet with Trooper Butt and his family. |
