| Retired military and police dogs face physical and emotional challenges as they transition to civilian life. Many develop age-related health issues like arthritis or hip dysplasia, as well as injuries and chronic pain from years of demanding service. They may also suffer from dental damage or hearing loss due to their work conditions. Emotionally, separation from their handlers can cause anxiety, while adjusting to a calmer lifestyle may lead to restlessness or depression. Some even experience PTSD, showing fear or aggression triggered by past trauma. Providing medical care, rehabilitation, and keeping them with their handlers helps these dogs enjoy a healthy, peaceful retirement. Source: Rider, D., & Rider, D. (2025, January 10).
